FOUR VICTORIES; ONE DEFEAT.

The Nine Makes a Good Record During the Vacation.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The vacation season has, on the whole, been a successful one for the nine. There has been considerable improvement in fielding-although in this respect the infield is still weak-the base-running is about the same, and the batting is better than it has been for several years. The make-up of the team has been unchanged during the recess, so that the team play together much better now. There is, however, much still to be learned in this respect, as the backing-up has been but little developed. Captain Dean is playing far better than ever before. In batting he leads the nine, and in fielding he has shown great improvement.

The pitching has been done chiefly by Paine, who has been in the box four out of five games. He has proved far more effective than ever before on account of his coolness and his good control. Although he has been batted hard at times, the hits have generally been well scattered.

Behind the bat Scannell has been playing his old steady game, and by his uniform good work has done much to in spire confidence in the rest of the team.

T. G. Stevenson, at first, has been batting well during the last few games and will advance from the bottom of the batting list when it is revised. His fielding has been uniformly clean. In all his work Stevenson has shown a most commendable determination to do his utmost all the time.

The same earnestness has marked the work of R. H. Stevenson at third and Crawford at shortstop.

The outfield has been doing some good fielding. Rand and Burgess have made several remarkable catches. Burgess has, however, been hitting much better than Rand. Haughton has batted well, but is not very reliable at critical moments. He pitched a fairly good game against Bangor.
