Professor Putnam lectured last evening in the Fogg Museum on "The Ethnic Significance of Conventionalism and Symbolism in Ancient American Art." He traced by means of illustrations the gradual development from realism to conventionalism and symbolism in the carvings left by the savage peoples. By means of following this development, said Professor Putnam, we have a chance to study the beginings of art till we get into the pure idealism which the old classics have given us.
