The Newton tennis tournament began yesterday afternoon and is being played off as fast as possible on the one court.

The matches in the first round resulted as follows:

E. Sheafe beat S. P. Shaw, Jr., '99, 6-1.

H. C. Whitfield '99 beat O. M. Bostwick, 6-4, 1-6, 7-5.

J. P. Paret beat H. Foster '98, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.

H. C. Curtis '96 beat A. S. Pier '95, 4-6, 6-1, 9-7.

E. R. Marvin '99 beat R. H. Carleton '98, 6-2, 6-2.

The following matches will be played today: Thomas vs. Scudder, 1.30; Putnam vs. McKittrick, 2.30; Codman vs. Stackpole, 3.30; Wise vs. Shaw, 4.30. In the evening, Whitman vs. Rising, Bigelow vs. Read, Wilson vs. Ingraham.
