THE YALE LETTER.

The prospectus of elective courses for juniors and seniors for the year 1897-98 has appeared and shows many additions and changes. Aside from the prescribed courses in Psychology and Philosophy there are offered twenty-two courses in Philosophy, thirteen in Political Science and Law, ten in History, thirteen in Romance languages, nine in Germanic languages, fourteen in English, eighteen in Ancient languages, eight in Biblical Literature, three in the Fine Arts, sixteen in Natural Sciences, eight in Mathematics, seven in Music, one in Physical Education and one in Military Science.

Yale's victory in debate over Harvard makes Yale men all the more eager to complete their record by defeating Princeton in the coming debate. A majority of the competitors would have preferred to have supported the nega-of the subject. The final competitive debates to choose the speakers will be held April 12 or 13.

The first game of the baseball nine against the Johns Hopkins team showed the nine to be in rather good form for so early in the season. The squad has now been reduced to eighteen men. The following have been taken to the Freshman crew training table: Greenway, Niedecken, Brock, Patterson, Cross, Allen, Greenleaf, Simons, Flint, McGee. J. P. Brock has been elected permanent captain of the crew.

Efforts are being made this year to increase the interest in the system of scrub crews, started last spring. Crews have been formed in every class under the coaching of members of the University or class crews. The series of interappointment baseball nines under the management of the editors of the Record, has also been started again. From these nines members of the University squad are, of course, debarred. Through these scrub organizations plenty of opportunity in athletics is offered to men not able to be members of the University or class teams.

Mr. W. T. Bull, '88 S., has announced positively that he will be able to coach the candidates for backs on next fall's team for at least one week some time during the spring. The practice will consist chiefly in starting, punting and passing.
