Three of the prizes offered for essays on subjects chosen from the field of political science have been awarded by committees of the faculty as follows:

The Toppan prize, open for competion to holders of academic degrees only, has been awarded to Theodore Clarke Smith, of Roxbury, a student last year in the Graduate School, for an essay entitled "The Liberty and the Freesoil Parties in the Northwest."

The Sumner prize, competition for which is open to all members of the University, has been awarded to William Henry Gorrill, of Oakland, California, a student in the Graduate School, for an essay entitled "The European Concert and the Problem of Universal Peace."

One of the Paine prizes, open for competition to all members of the University, has been awarded to Charles Newton Lathrop '96, of Oakland, California, for an essay entitled "A Plan for the Investigation of City Slums."
