Baseball.

Yesterday's game with the Matthews nine of Lowell was a great contrast to Saturday's game in point of sharp playing. The dash with which the visitors began put the 'varsity at once on the alert, and there was no delay during the game. The Mathews were not strong in hitting. They made but three hits in all, McCarthy getting a double. For Harvard Hallowell made a three base hit to centre field, and Hovey made two singles, eight hits were made in all by the 'varsity. Eighteen of the Mathews nine struck out. J. Highlands pitched six innings and struck out thirteen, Wiggin pitched two innings and struck out three, while J. Highlands, who went into the box in the ninth, struck out two men. Only two Harvard men struck out, an excellent showing, in spite of the fact that not a great many hits were made. Harvard made five runs in the seventh and six in the ninth. Mathews made a single run in the second.

But thirty-six men came to bat, and in the first five innings only fifteen Harvard men batted. The most brilliant work of the game was in the fourth, when J. Highlands pitched just nine balls.

Lowell was substituted for Sullivan in the ninth inning.

The most encouraging thing to be said of the nine as it played yesterday is that strike-outs and errors were few. Corbett also caught much better than on Saturday. The nine certainly have good prospects for the games of the recess.
