PHILADELPHIA, May 15. - Pennsylvania defeated Harvard today in a game which was a model up to the seventh inning. The big grand stand on Franklin Field could not have accommodated any more people, the attendance, on a conservative estimate, being somewhere between 4000 and 5000. Pennsylvania had rather the better of the opening innings, securing more hits and getting a number of men on bases, but could not score. The visitors were the first to break the ice, Adams securing a run in the sixth. Neither side played clean ball after that, the Harvard nine making some bad errors, which allowed Pennsylvania hits to count for runs.
Captain Whittemore at short was the chief offender. In the last half of the ninth Harvard earned runs on two hits for four bases each. Reuning had his hand badly hurt on a pick-up in the ninth inning, and foolishly continued to play. Schoenhut had to ease up and as a consequence was hit hard for the first time during the game. In every respect Schoenhut pitched a fine game, besides scoring the first run for the home team, with a slashing two-baser. Paine struck out nine men and barring his wildness pitched very strong ball. The score:
