The hall of the Hasty Pudding Club was crowded to the doors last night at the first public performance of "Proserpina" in Cambridge. The play went off with perfect smoothness from beginning to end and the interest of the audience was not allowed to flag for an instant. The principals entered so thoroughly into the spirit of their parts that it would be hard to say who did the best. The acting of E. G. Merrill as Venus and W. K. Brice as Pluto was perhaps the most finished, while that of J. Purdon, as Cupid, the "chronic infant" was the most amusing. C. M. Flandrau, as Mrs. Ceres, I. S. Adams, as Proserpina, and W. Ames, as Exemplicus, also acted their parts excellently.
One of the best pieces was the duet of Cupid and Venus by J. Purdon '95. The chorus showed the results of long and thorough training and their singing, especially in the Wedding Chorus and "Down, Down to Hades" was very effective.
The second public performance will be given in the club house tonight at 8.30 and the third next Monday.
