Harvard Beats Dartmouth 3 to 2 in an Uninteresting Game.

Yesterday afternoon Harvard in a measure retrieved her defeat of last week by beating Dartmouth with a score of three to two. The game was rather slow and uninteresting, but was nevertheless encouraging, as it was the best played game the nine have put up this season. With the exception of Whittemore's two errors, the fielding was swift and sure. The outfield had little work to do. For the infield Winslow and Stevenson put up the best games. The fielding of the former was very good, but he does not seem to know what to do when he reaches a base. This fault is noticeable with the whole nine, and by careless base-running and poor coaching to men on bases many good chances for scoring are lost. Highlands pitched steadily, striking out five men and giving but two bases on balls. Six scattered hits were all that Dartmouth could make off him. The batting of the home nine was also rather weak, though what hits were made were timely ones, as is shown by the fact that all the runs were earned. Six hits, with a total of ten, is the record for the afternoon. For the most part the men could not send the ball past the infield, while if they succeeded in this they generally flied out.

Dartmouth came to the bat first. McCornack fouled out to Scannell; Folsom knocked a grounder which was fielded by Highlands to first; then Abbott made a safe hit to left field, but was put out in trying to reach second. Harvard started off rather more successfully. Winslow hit a grounder to third and was put out at first. Hayes then came to the bat and knocked a three-bagger and scored on Whittemore's single. Scannell struck out and Paine flied out to second base.

In the second and third innings Dartmouth did not score. Harvard missed a fine chance to score in the third as there were men on second and third and but one out. Both sides scored in the fourth. Abbott came to the bat first and struck out. Adams then got his base on balls, went to second on a wild pitch; Wilkins then hit to Whittemore, who fielded him out at first and Adams reached third and scored on Davis's single. Lane then went out at first. For Harvard, Wrenn got his base on balls. Stevenson hit to second who put Wrenn out. Rand then hit to short who fielded Stevenson out at second. Rand stole second and scored on Highlands's two bagger. Highlands reached third on Leahy's fumble of Winslow's grounder, but was put out on trying to steal home.

A single by Patey and a double by McCornack brought in one more run for Dartmouth in the eighth inning but this was all they could make. Harvard likewise scored her last run in this inning. Whittemore hit safely and stole second. Scannell flied out to right and Paine knocked a foul which was caught by first. Wrenn then knocked a two bagger and Whittemore scored. Stevenson was put out at first.
