NEW HAVEN, CONN., June 8.

The week here has been very quiet, as the semi-annual examinations have commenced and nearly everyone is busily engaged in preparing for them.

Ninety-eight won the class championship in baseball on Wednesday by defeating ninety-six in the final game of the interclass series by the close score of five to four. The university nine have had no regularly scheduled game this week, spending their time in practice for today's game at Princeton. The news of their victory came in the nature of a surprise to a great many, who believed Princeton would win the game on her own grounds.

A large crowd gathered at the New Haven House this afternoon to witness the departure of the crew for New London. Each man on the crew and each substitute was heartily cheered. Messrs. Cook, Bolton and Ives will have charge of the coaching. The freshman crew will not go to New London until next Saturday. The Yale Corinthian Yacht Club held their annual regatta last week.

John Howland '94 won the New England tennis championship cup on Friday, by defeating A. E. Foote '96, last year's champion. Howland defeated Malcolm G. Chace '96 S. in the finals of the tournament.

Work has been commenced upon the new Phelps gateway, which will occupy a position between Welch and Lawrence Halls and overlooking the New Haven Green. The building is designed as a tower flanked by four octagonal turrets, with an elevation from ground to top of parapet of about 100 feet. The exterior will be faced with sandstone from the Longmeadow quarries. Collegiate gothic has been adopted as the design of the new hall. This building will complete the long front on the easterly side of the campus.
