Last evening Professor Lanman gave a lecture in Harvard Hall on "William Dwight Whitney: the Life and Character of a Great Scholar."
After sketching Dr. Whitney's early career, Professor Lanman told of how, after graduating with distinction from Williams College, he had become interested in the study of Indology and resolved to make it his life work. His special department was Sanskrit. He was one of the most prominent members of the Oriental Society and of the American Philological Society, of both of which he was president. Dr. Whitney's crowning achievement as a scholar was his Sanskrit grammar, though to the great body of his countrymen the Century Dictionary is his greatest monument.
