Saturday afternoon, at the rooms of the Prospect Union, a new cooperative society was formed to further the education of the working classes. The organization is to be known as the Cooperative Union of America. It is modelled largely after the Cooperative Union of Great Britain, which conducts its work on the same plan as does the Rochdale Society, the first of the English cooperative societies.
Among the members of the central board of directors are Professor F. G. Peabody Dr. George Hodges of the Episcopal Theological School, Robert Treat Paine, F. H. Thomas of the Cooperative Society, and James B. Reynolds, head of the university settlement of New York. Professor Peabody and Dean Hodges were among those who spoke on subjects connected with the new organization.
