The first public performance of Moliere's comedy by the Cercle Francais which was given in Brattle Hall last night was a success in every way. As a result of Professor de Sumichrast's careful direction there was not a hitch in the whole presentation, and even the final ceremony, which has dragged somewhat at the rehearsals, was interesting and amusing.
The greatest praise is due H. Schurz '97, who took the part of Argan. the principal character of the play. His rendering of Moliere's idiomatic French, his acting, and his make-up were all excellent and showed a great deal of conscientious and faithful work. Of the other characters, E. G. Knoblauch '96, as Angelique, G. C. Ward '98, as Beline, and F. H. Kinnicutt '97, as Diafoirus fils, did particularly well. Knoblauch made a very pretty and sprightly Angelique. His acting was easy and natural, and his duet with Stone in the second act, written by J. A. Carpenter '97, received and enthusiastic encore.
Both ballets were well done and thoroughly appreciated, each being eneored. Their success is due entirely to the efforts of V. Munroe '96, who has trained them carefully and who himself did some good dancing as one of the Egyptian men.
Brattle Hall was comfortably filled by a typical Cambridge audience, composed of students and their friends; several members of the Faculty were also present. The play will be given again Thursday night at Copley Hall, Boston, and Saturday night at Brattle Hall.
