'Varsity and Second Score Once Each.- N. Shaw Plays on the 'Varsity.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

The playing of the 'varsity eleven was not quite so aggresive yesterday afternoon as on Wednesday. The men did not put as much spirit into their work. The line work as a whole was not so good as it has been, although it was at times creditable.

Mr. Deland was not on the field but there were many other coaches present, although not so many as on Wednesday. Dr. W. A. Brooks was on the field but he did not take an active part in the coaching. Cranston, Mason and Lewis helped the line men on the 'varsity, while Waters put some life into the second eleven.

The second eleven was stronger than it has been before this year. It held the 'varsity down to one touchdown, at the same time scoring once for itself. In line work the second eleven was almost equal to the first. It was chiefly due to C. Brewer's superior punting that the second did not gain so much ground as the first. The second eleven kept the playing near the centre of the field most of the time, often holding the first eleven for three downs and forcing C. Brewer to kick.

Brewer's punting was much quicker than it has been before. He made several long punts, notably one of 55 yards. In tackling and running, however, he did poorly. He ought to have had Gonterman when the latter made his run through tackle for a touchdown.

Gonterman deserves credit for playing a plucky game with a lame leg, but his defensive work has shown little or no improvement lately. Hayes made a brilliant run once when his kick would have been blocked, dodging several men and keeping his feet remarkably well.

The chief event of the day was the reappearance of J. E. N. Shaw at right guard on the 'varsity. He followed the ball very closely, falling on it every time Beale did not get it.

The line-up was;
