The first scientific expedition to set out under the name of Amherst is to start in 1896 for Japan. Professor David P. Todd will head the expedition, which will sail from San Francisco next spring. Several noted scientists will accompany the party. The post of observation will be located at Yezo, one of the largest northern islands of Japan. The trip as planned will cover 17,000 miles.
