The following editorial which appeared in The Dartmouth is of interest as showing the growth of a principle started at Harvard:
"It has long been a cherished scheme of the athletic authorities of the college to follow the lead of Harvard in reducing the scope of her athletics to inter-collegiate contests on college grounds. Even the Cambridge University, more favorably situated geographically, and less stinted in financial resources, has found it difficult to adhere strictly to her avowed purpose, and it is hardly to be expected that Dartmouth in her far corner of the earth should be more fortunate. Yet progress is being made toward this ultimate end. Already our football interests are substantially upon this basis, and the track team fails to conform only in its place of meeting the teams of other colleges. Baseball it will be far more diffieult to bring under the same restriction, though much has been accomplished in this direction during the present season. As time goes on other colleges will recognize the soundness of the Harvard principle, and, falling into line, will make its attainment possible."
