The Second Class Race.

The sophomore crew won the one mile race yesterday afternoon, again beating the seniors, this time by only two boatlengths. The juniors came in last, but only about five feet behind the seniors. The freshmen did not row. Time, 5m. 30s.

When the crews took their stations at six o'clock at the Union Boat Club, a slight wind was blowing, but not strong enough to disturb the water. The tide was coming in and everything was perfect for a good race.

The word was given at three minutes past six. '94 got the best of the start, but '96 was rapidly gaining and would have passed them in a few more strokes when they were called back by the referee's whistle. No. 7 in the junior boat had jumped his slide and a fresh start was taken. This time the three crews shot out as one boat, and remained together to the quarter mile mark. Here '95 dropped the stroke to 30 per minute, while '94 and '96 kept steadily at it, the first rowing 36 and the latter 34 strokes to the minute. Both the latter crews were splashing considerably.

At the end of the half mile '96 was spurting and soon put two boat lengths between herself and '94. This lead was kept to the finish. There was some space between '94 and '95, who kept up the spurt to the finish.
