The number of candidates for the freshman nine has been reduced. Twenty-four are now practicing every afternoon on Norton's Field. The work consists of batting, at the nets, after which two nines are picked out and a practice game played. The men show no interest in their work and nearly all of them are disposed to shirk.
The following candidates remain: Catchers-Benson, Field, Scott; pitchers-Hill, Gregory, Saunders; first base-Dexter, Palmer, Turner; second base-Stevens, Dean; third base-Martin, Hewes, Reynolds; shortstop-Dow, Gray, Castle; outfield-Phelan, Jones, Horton, Pickering, Gannett.
