The New England Championships Athletic Meeting, held in the South Armory on Saturday evening, was in every way a success. The events were run off with commendable smoothness and were finished ahead of the scheduled time. The showing made by the Harvard athletes was encouraging, particularly in the hurdles and distance runs.
The first event to be run off was the 75 yds. dash. The winners of the trial heats and the times made were: Garcelon, H. A. A., 8s.; Lefurgey, H. A. A., 8s.; Smith, H. A. A., 8s.; Wefers, Boston College, 7 4-5s.; Whittemore, H. A. A., 8s.; Patterson, Williams Col., 8s.; Williams, H. A. A., 8 1-5s.; Allen, Williams Col., 8s.
The semi-finals reduced the field to Wefers, Patterson, Whittemore, Garcelon and Lefurgey. Wefers won the finals, with Patterson second and Whittemore third. Time, 8s.
The M. I. T. class team race was won by the seniors in 3m. 18s.
The 1000 yds. was won easily by Hill, H. A. A., in 2 min. 27 4-5s.; Gallagher, of Worcester, was second, and Lakin, H. A. A., third.
The 3000 yds. was run in heats, three men from each heat going in the finals. The results were: First heat, won by Wheelwright, H. A. A.; second, T. Keane, S. A. C.; third, Bremer, H. A. A. Time, 36 3-5s. Second heat, won by Whittren, H. A. A.; second, Carthy, H. A. A.; third, Carlton, R. L. S. Time, 36 2-5s. Third heat, won by F. H. Bigelow, W. A. C.; second, Hildreth, H. A. A.; third, Goldmark, H. A. A. The finals was won by Wheelwright; Keane, second; Whittren, third. Time, 36 3-5s.
The Harvard class team race was something of a surprise, as it had not been supposed '95 was equal to '94. The men who ran in the first relay were J. Sullivan '94 T., Abbe '95, F. da S. Prado '96, and C. A. Brown '97. They finished with '96, leading; '94, second; '95, third, and '97, last. The next relay finished with J. F. McGrath '95, ahead, and C. B. Gleason '94, C. S. Fuller '96, and G. S. Prouty '97, in the order named. The third and fourth relays consisted respectively of J. H. Meader '95, F. A. Dorman '94, W. L. S., Brayton '96, A. M. Eaton '97, and H. W. Jameson '95, L. I. Prouty '94, R. W. Bull '96, and W. R. Mansfield '97. '95 won; '94, second; '96, third, and '97, last. Mansfield, the last freshman to run, started far behind the other runners, and, considering everything, he ran a very plucky race.
The 70 yds. high hurdle race was won by S. Chase, a Dartmouth man, in the fast time of 9 1-5 s. Coonley, H. A. A., was a good second, and Lord, B. A. A., was third. Garcelon, H. A. A., started in this race but after his three hard heats in the 75 yds. he was beaten by both Coonley and Monroe in the trial heats.
The 600 yds. was perhaps the prettiest race of the evening. Dadmun, of Worcester, and Merrill, H. A. A., drew far away from the field. On the last lap Dadmun was in the lead and apparently running strong. On the last stretch, however, Merrill forged ahead just in time to break the tape.
The mile run was fast. MacLaughlin and Allison, two Worcester men, made the pace at first and then Coolidge, H. A. A., went out ahead. He was passed, however, on the last lap by Blake, B. A. A., who won in 4m. 39 4-5s. Allison was third. Coolidge ran inside of 4m. 41s.
Stingel, of E. Cambridge, won the high jump at 5 ft. 10 1-4 in.; Chaney, H. A. A., was second at 5 ft. 9 1-4 in.; and Stickney, H. A. A., third, at 5 ft. 8 1-2 in.
In the class team race, H. W. Jameson '95, came in first, with L. I. Prouty '94, R. W. Bull '96, and W. R. Mansfield '97, in the order named.
