Varsity Crew.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

As the season has advanced the outlook for the 'varsity crew has improved quite a little. The chances are now that the crew will be a much better one than could be expected, considering the discouraging prospects at the beginning of the year. The men are fairly lively, take well to the coaching and try to do what they are told. All this augurs well.

The crews are made up as follows:

FIRST CREW.

Townsend '96, 166, Bow.

Brewer '96, 156, 2

Murchie '95, 172 1-2, 3

Derby '96, 167, 4

Duffield '96, 181, 5

Potter '95, 180, 6

Fennessy '96, 168, 7

Bullard '96. 160, Stroke.

SECOND CREW.

Emmons '95, 184, Bow.

Hervey, '94, 160, Bow.

Hoag '94, 161 1-2, 2

Purdon '95, 152, 3

Beals '94, 166, 4

Heckscher '94, 170, 5

Houghton Sp., 175, 5

Richardson '95, 166, 6

Blake '94, 166, 7

Davis '95, 162, Stroke.

The time of both crews is very poor and the blade work is ragged although the first crew is better than the second in these respects. The individual faults of the men are as follows:

FIRST CREW.

Townsend, bow.- Goes back too far and rows his oar out at the finish. Otherwise fairly good.

Brewer, No. 2.- Is stiff and goes back too far, does not get enough reach, cocks his oar and rushes his slide.

Murchie, No. 3.- Slow all through the stroke, hunches his inside shoulder.

Derby, No. 4.- Recover is jerky and slumps on finish.

Duffield, No. 5.- Hunches his shoulder and is late in applying power on his oar.

Potter, No. 6.- Reaches with shoulders and goes back too far.

Fennessy, No. 7.- Falls over at full reach, otherwise good.

Bullard, stroke.- Gets too much body reach and goes back to far.

SECOND CREW.

Hervey, bow.- Does not get his weight on his oar and meets.

Emmons, bow.- Catches with legs, meets his oar and slumps.

Hoag, No. 2.- Rushes his slide and does not hold with his back the power secured by legs.

Purdon, No. 3.- Goes back too far and does not catch hard enough.

Beals, No. 4.- Stiff and rather labored.

Heckscher, No. 5.- Separates the parts of the stroke and his rowing is rather labored.

Houghton, No. 5.- Bends arms too soon and gets too much play in his shoulders, does not hold slide long enough at catch and slumps at finish.

Richardson, No. 6.- Gets body reach at end of recover instead of at first and does not get shoulders on enough at the catch.

Blake, No. 7.- Smooth, but gets too much body swing and continues his body swing after legs are down.

Davis, stroke.- Jerky, hangs at full reach, goes back too far and reaches with his shoulders.
