The course in Military Science is designed to give men the training necessary to fit them for their duties as citizens. In the late war many Harvard men went into the armies of the North and the South. They showed great courage and willingness to do duty, but they knew absolutely nothing about military affairs.
The lectures at present are upon recruiting and organization; and upon the arrangement of an army on the field of battle. The art of war will be treated upon in full. Then will follow tactics, military engineering, and military law.
A knowledge of military law is indispensable to a man who commands militia. For instance, he must know when he may, or may not, with inpunity order his company to fire upon a mob. The lectures will sometimes be illustrated by stereopticon views, some of which will be from pictures taken in the Civil War.
The drill is given merely because it is the condition on which the U. S. Government details Lieutenant Robinson for the work.
