Some good material has shown up for the university crew. It is good, strong number in most cases, and in hardly any, does it seem to lack the necessary spring and snap to make it valuable stock to be worked into excellent furnishing for the 'varsity boat. Several men now playing foot ball have shown good qualities for rowing and will join the others soon. Judging from the present showing of new candidates, there will be a lively contest for the positions in boat this year.

The men are working in the gymnasium at present, but if the weather continues warm and pleasant some work will be done on the river. Adams and Perkins are doing most of the coaching.

A large number of freshmen have presented themselves as candidates for their class crew. There is much good material it seems; but, of course, only about a dozen at the most can be kept finally. A large number of the men are very light and can not expect to be kept long; because even those who must be dropped would not be willing to have precious time spent upon them to the detriment of their crew. It is evident that much time is wasted at present upon this large number of candidates that can not possibly be kept. Probably more than two-thirds of the men will be dropped this week. Every man should make it his business to canvas his class and urge the strong men to try for the crew.

The crew is very fortunate to have D. F. Jones '92 to coach them. He has had a valuable experience in rowing and needs only good material and earnest support to turn out a good crew next June.
