We give below an account of track and field athletics at Yale and of the prospect of the Mott-Haven team. The Yale Alumni Weekly says "The prospects for winning are so much better than they were at this time last year that we give the following sketch of the material on hand."
The men are now working under captain Jones with the assistance of trainer Murphy. Besides the fact that a good trainer has been secured two other improvements have been made which increase Yale's chances - the facilities for indoor work offered by the new gymnasium and the changes which have been made in the running track.
Owing to the loss of the sprinters Swayne and Allen the Weekly says "Yale cannot count upon winning any points in the 100 and 220 yds. dashes; for the hurdle races, the chances are very much better. D. Lyman '94 and T. Eaton '94 being probable winners in the two events."
There is plenty of material from which good men for the runs should be chosen and Wright '93, S, is a good man for the mile walk.
"In the bicycle race, Brewster, who holds the inter-collegiate record of 5.47, ought to win first place, while Allen '93, and Glenny '94S., may also be counted upon to do good work."
"As to the field events the chances are excellent, especially in the weight contests, Hickok '95S., being almost a sure winner in the hammer throwing, having already a record which is close to the intercollegiate. Stillman '94S., Lyman '95 and A. Brown Jr. '96, are also good men who should add several points to Yale's score. Cartwright '93, has had considerable experience in pole vaulting and ought to win a place in this event, while Sheldon '96 who holds several Andover records, has a good chance in the high and broad jumps. It will be seen by the foregoing criticism that Yale's chances for winning the Mott Haven games this spring are good."
