Base Ball.

Harvard played a very close and interesting game with Brown on Holmes field yesterday afternoon. Harvard out-batted and out-fielded her opponents, and won the game on its merits, but she probably would not have scored so many times in the last three innings if Woodcock had been kept in to pitch. He had to leave the game to sing in a concert of the Brown College Glee Club, and Sexton was not nearly so effective. Howe, '93, was in the box for Harvard, and after he had once settled down to work he did very well. Howe was slow in his delivery, however, and the Brown men were enabled to steal a large number of bases in consequence. Brown's few hits were very opportune, and they brought in men nearly every time. Harvard's hits were more scattered, and up to the last three innings less effective.

Harvard was first at the bat. Dean got a base on balls, but was out trying to steal second. Linn hit safely to left and took second on Howland's single, third on Mason's sacrifice, but was put out at the plate on Trafford's easy grounder to pitcher. Howland reached third on the same play, with Mason, whose grounder had been fumbled, on second, and Trafford on first. Woodcock gave a base on balls and forced Howland in. Alward was the third out on a foul to third base.

For Brown Dowd got a base on balls; Howe's wild throw to Trafford let him around to third. Hovey made a single and Dowd scored. No more runs were scored in this inning, although two more Brown men reached first. Neither side scord in the second inning. In the third Howland started off with a clean two bagger to left. Mason flied out. Trafford made a sacrifice, but the first baseman made a bad muff, and Trafford was safe, while Howland scored. The next two men were easy outs. For Brown, Dowd made a hit and stole second. He came in on Hovey's single. Hovey took second on the throw to the plate, third on Sexton's sacrifice, and home on Messer's timely hit to left. Harvard did not score in the next three innings.

In her half of the sixth Brown made one tally. Woodcock was hit by a pitched ball and stole second and third. Magill's single to centre brought him in. Sexton started in to pitch for Brown in the seventh inning, and his catcher did not support him well. Howland got a base on balls and stole second. Mason was also given a base on balls; he took third, and Howland came in, on passed balls. The catcher threw wild to third and Mason scored, tying the score. Alward then hit safely, and stole second. He came in on a passed ball. Soule was the last man out. For Amherst, with one man out, O'Rourke got his base on balls. He stole second, took third on Messer's hit to left, and came home while Mason was picking himself up. This run tied the score.

In the eighth Dean got his base on third's high throw to first, and made a daring steal of second; Linn's sacrifice took him to third and he came in on Weeks' wild throw. In the ninth Harvard got another run Trafford hit safely and stole second; Upton got first on Trafford's out and stole second. He took third on a wild pitch, and home on Alward's three-bagger to right. Alward got out at the plate and Soule struck out.
