It had been planned on yesterday, the birthday of James Russell Lowell to hold a public meeting in Sanders Theatre in in the morning at which Mr. Wayne Mac Veagh, formerly Attorney General of the United States and an old friend of Mr. Lowell, was to give an address. Owing to Mac Veagh's illness, however, the plan had to be given up for the present.
The other service in commemoration of Mr. Lowell was originated by Professor Child and took place in Appleton Chapel yesterday afternoon. This was in no way intended to be public, but was meant exclusively for relatives and intimate friends of the Lowell family and for invited guests. It consisted entirely of music which was arranged and conducted under the careful and intelligent supervision of Mr. Locke, the organist and choir master, and Mr. G. L. Osgood of the class, of '66. In addition to the regular chapel choir there was the choir of St. Paul's Church, and both were assisted by the following well-known Boston singers:
Tenors - J. C. Bartlett, George Hawley, Edward E. Holden, Thomas Johnson, W. T. Meek, T. H. Norris, George J. Parker, Elijah Spears, L. B. Walker, George W. Want, Edwin F. Webber.
Basses - D. M. Babcock, Geo, R. Clark, Henry A. Cook, Clarence E. Hay, L. G. Ripley, Geo. R. Remele, A. C. Ryder, Geo. R. Titus, Myron W. Whitney.
The service itself was of a most appropriate and impressive nature There was no address, but the ten selections given below were executed with the deepest feeling and expression. It is doubtful if a congregation ever before left Appleton Chapel with a keener sense of the beauty and power of the music they had just heard. The programme was as follows:

2. From the Requiem Mass in C minor Cherubini
3. From the Requiem Mass in D minor Cherubini
4. From the Miserere Allegri
