The practice on Soldiers Field yesterday afternoon had a particular interest in the reappearance of Lake. He did not play for very long, but his presence seemed to add a good deal to the spirits of the team, for all played with a good deal of snap. Lake showed very much of his old vigor and at the end seemed no worse for his practice.
The play of the rest of the team was quite encouraging, the effects of the Chicago game seemed finally to have worn off, and the eleven played with their old precision and go. Lewis was in the centre with Waters in his usual place. As for the other guard, Acton played for the first half, and after that he changed places with Mackie who was on the second eleven and who had been breaking through remarkably well. There was an unusual state of things at tackle, none of the regular men were out, for Newell's leg is still troubling him, and Upton and Mason are both laid off temporarily. The men who did play tackles today were Gardner Perry L. S. and R. B. Blake '94. Emmons and Hallowell were on the ends as usual and Trafford was at quarter back. Beside Lake there were back of the line Gage and Corbett. Brewer took Lake's place when he stopped playing. Gray did not play.
The practice of yesterday promised well for the game which the eleven is to play with Cornell to-morrow at Springfield. Cornell has been making a very good showing this year and is expected to put up a sharp game against Harvard.
The team will leave for Springfield on Saturday morning on the 9 o'clock train, and will return at half past seven. They will stay at the Massasoit House.
