A wet, drizzling storm, half snow, half rain, interrupted the goal kicking contest. The ball was wet, Jarvis field was slippery, and on the whole the conditions for good kicking were very unsatisfactory. The wind, being rather strong and gusty, added to the unfavorable conditions. Although the +++rials from the two nearest distances were completed, the results will not be counted, but the whole contest will be postponed to the first dry day.
There was a large number of candidates, eleven out of a possible twenty-six; last year there were only six. The first man to score from the 25 yard line was Oppenheim. Russell, Brewer and Trafford each kicked two out of three drop kicks from this distance, and Oppenheim, Corbett, and Eddy scored once. Of the place kicks from the 30 yard line Mackie kicked all three; Brewer, Russell, and Eddy each two and Corbett one. The scoring when these two distances had been kicked was as follows: Russell and Brewer led with a score of 8, Mackie and Eddy next with 6, then Corbett and Trafford with 4. and Oppenheim with 2. The records of Lake, Brice, Mason, and Newell were unvarying. The 35 yard kicking was begun, in which Mackie raised his total to 9.
If anything can be judged by the kicking yesterday, the contest when it finally comes off, ought to be quite exciting.
