The new Chicago University has opened this year under remarkably favorable circumstances. One hundred young men and women of Chicago have taken the entrance examinations, the majority being pupils of the various high schools. In addition to these resident students, five hundred others from all parts of the country have registered and engaged rooms at the dormitories or in private families. It is confidently expected by President Harper and others who are closely connected in the work of the university that before the year is over, the number of students enrolled will reach as many as a thousand.

The graduate and divinity dormitories which have accommodations for two hundred men are all occupied and the Drexel, with rooms for seventy, designed especially for the use of under-graduates, has long since been filled. The rooms in the other dormitories, the Hotel Beatrice, for women, and the University Commons, suited for at least four hundred, are nearly all spoken for. The professors and instructors are, with few exceptions, on hand and working energetically, and it is expected the whole university will be in running order within a very short time.
