Holy Cross 3; Harvard 2.

The game yesterday afternoon was a close and exciting one, both teams showing up well. The pitching was very effective on both sides, Bates being almost at his best, and striking out thirteen men in all. The teams hit very evenly, though many of Harvard's hits were made when it was too late to score runs.

Trafford, in four times at the bat, made three hits and a sacrifice, and Hovey made two clean singles. The feature of the Holy Cross game was the fielding of Cain, who made one very brilliant catch. Mahoney also played well at second base. For the first three innings Holy Cross batters went out in regular order, Harvard, meanwhile, making two runs. After Merritt had muffed Hallowell's foul fly the latter got first on called balls, started for second just as Hovey made a clean hit to left field and kept on to third. He scored on Trafford's sacrifice to third base. Hovey went to third on the attempt to put out Hallowell, and Trafford stole second; both men were left, however, as Frothingham flied out to centre field and Alward struck out. Harvard made a second run in the third inning. Dean got to first on called balls and started to steal second. Merritt threw to centre field and then W. Kelly made a wild throw to third, while Dean ran around to home. After the men were out Trafford made a hit to second base but was quickly put out on Frothingham's hit to second. In the fourth inning Harvard ought to have had a run. Alward made a fine single to centre field but was thrown out on attempting to steal second. After Cook had struck out Upton made a two-bagger to left field, and but for slow running might have gone to third. He was left on second as Bates was out on a ground ball to second base.

In the fifth inning Dean was hit by a pitched ball but was thrown out trying to steal second. In the sixth inning Trafford was first man at the bat and made his second single of the game, but a moment later was doubled up at second on Frothingham's hit to Mahoney. In the eighth innings, after two men were out, Hovey and Trafford made singles but were left by Frothingham's easy hit to pitcher.

Holy Cross began to score in the fourth inning. O'Neil singled to right field and stole second. Mahoney struck out, but Upton muffed the third strike and had to throw Mahoney out at first. Meanwhile O'Neil went to third and came in on Trafford's excusable fumble of Cain's grounder. In the fifth inning J. Kelly got first on Dean's error, went to third on W. Kelly's hit to right field, and was thrown out at the plate by Hovey. Kelly went to second on the throw in, took third on Kelly's out and scored on a passed ball. In the sixth inning O'Neil made a hit to left field, stole second and came home on Upton's wild throw to second base, which went by Hallowell.
