"Yesterday's game was a strong contrast to the one next before it" might head the account of every game our nine has played this year. The grounds were abominable. In left field and in left centre especially the field sloped down so that the fielders were almost out of sight when they chased long hits. The bad work of the nine in the infield is partly explained by the hummocks among which the balls rolled. But the nine cannot be considered to have done its best under difficulties. In the sixth inning the men seemed to lose their heads, and four runs came in on a two base hit and a scratch. The redeeming feature of Harvard's play was the work of Frothingham and Hallowell in the field. The Lowells proved to be hard hitters, and gave our men plenty to do. Bates and Howe each took a turn at pitching, and about the same number of hits were made off each. Howe gave several bases on balls at critical points, but distinguished himself at the bat. The feature of the game was Bradley's hitting. The first ball that was pitched he knocked far over Alward's head for a home run. When he next came to the bat he made a three bagger. The third time he hit safely for two bases, and the fourth time far enough to get to first.
Harvard made a run in the first inning on a base on balls given to Dean, Hallowell's sacrifice, a wild pitch and Hovey's base hit. In the third inning the Lowell pitcher was very wild, giving three bases on balls in succession. These, with Hallowell's hit, a steal, and two errors netted four runs. Another run was made in the eighth on a hit, a steal, a wild throw by Broughton, and Upton's sacrifice. In the ninth Harvard earned a run by Dean's three-bagger and Hovey's sacrifice.
