Since the resignation of Professor Carter in 1881, the chair of German at Yale has been vacant until day before yesterday when Professor Arthur H. Palmer of the Western Reserve University of Cleveland, O., was elected to fill the vacancy. Professor Palmer was graduated at the Western Reserve in 1879 and has long been at the head of the department of German in that institution. Although a comparatively young man, Prof. Palmer is a man of great breadth of mind and extraordinary critical ability. His ten years' experience as a professor on the Western Reserve and his erudition well fit him for his duties at Yale, which he will begin next September.
