The final contest of the class series was played yesterday afternoon on Jarvis Field, between ninety-five and ninety-six, and the latter by their victory secure the class championship. The game was sharply contested throughout and proved to be fully as interesting and exciting as any of the preceding games of the class series. The elevens were very evenly matched, neither side having any decided advantage, and the tactics employed were comparatively the same, both teams depending upon their backs, rather then upon mass plays. Fumbling and offside play were the most apparent weaknesses, but these were counter-balanced by the noticeable improvement in defensive play. The unexpected strength of the sophomores is due chiefly to the earnestness and persistency of Captain Borden in coaching his eleven and also to his ability in managing them. The individual work of the majority of the players was worthy of comment, but several men played exceptionally well. Borden, at quarter, distinguished himself by clean and accurate passing and good tackling. Hayes, Hamlen and Mann played well behind the line, while the aggressive work of Shea, Stevenson and Faxon in the line was noticeable.
Whittemore played by far the best game for the juniors and his work throughout the class series has been brilliant. Murchie, Cockrell and Teele showed up well, but Mills at quarter fumbled badly. The game begins with the ball in possession of the juniors. The flying wedge is stopped well by Stevenson and results in a short gain. Ninety-five by repeated rushes advance the ball to the 30 yard line, but lose it on a fumble. The sophomores by the good running of Hayes and Hamlen gain 35 yards, but are compelled to relinquish the ball on four downs. Whittemore is given the ball and gains 35 yards around Duff's end, but it is of no avail, as Mills fumbles, and ninety-six by successive gains is enabled to score a touchdown, from which a goal is kicked. After a short interval play is resumed and the sophomores, by a new opening play gain 20 yards. Hallowell's offside play compels his team to give up the ball. Ninety-five is forced to kick and Mills punts to the 35 yard line. The sophomores push the ball ten yards down the field, but lose it again by holding. Whittemore makes 25 yards around Duff, and gains follow in rapid succession until a touchdown is secured. Miller fails to kick a goal and thereby ninety-six wins. The game is soon called on account of darkness.
