Freshman Crew.

The Work that the Candidates Have Been Doing.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

At the beginning of the year about 70 men presented themselves as candidates for the freshman crew. Since then about half of them have dropped out, but the other half has been going through regular training. On October 23 the freshmen rowed some scratch races on the river. Four crews turned out, made up nearly entirely of crew candidates. Since then enough men to form three crews have been training regularly in the gymnasium. S. D. Parker '91, has been coaching them. Each crew practices about half an hour on the rowing weights, goes through some dumb bell exercise, and takes a run up North Avenue. The practice on the weights has consisted so far of body work with stiff arms. Lately the crew have been using the oars for a part of the practice. The men have been put through this training of two hours every afternoon regularly for the last month.

It is rather early, of course, to say anything about the form that the men are rowing in. All that can be said as yet is that they are a pretty light lot. Next Monday about 15 men that have been playing foot ball will begin training. As a rule they are somewhat heavier than the men now trying. The men that are now training are divided up into three crews, as follows:
