There are more changes than usual in the elective pamphlet this year. In the department of Semitic languages and history, course 12 of last year's pamphlet becomes course 11 this year, and what was course 11 last year, the third course in Assyrian, is omitted. Three new historical courses are offered in this department next year covering the history of Israel, history of the Hebrew religions, and history of the Spanish Califate.
Mr. Nicholson will have charge of Sanskrit 1 instead of Professor Lanman, and this will enable Professor Lanman to give Sanskrit 2, 3 and 4, omitted this year.
In Greek six introductory lectures will be delivered to the freshmen at different times during the year, one on Lysias and his times by Dr. Morgan; one on Socrates by Dr. Tarbell; two on Homer by Professor Wright; and two on the Greek Theatre by Professor J. W. White. An elementary course in Greek composition to be known as Greek F will be given by Dr. Tarbell. Dr. Tarbell will also give a course of lectures on the present state of Archaeological Discovery and Research in Greece. Professor Goodwin will not have any courses next year.
An elementary course in Latin composition, Latin F, will be introduced under the charge of Mr. Parker. Professor Smith will relieve Professor Allen of the charge of Latin A, and Professor Allen will give a new course designed to give practice in speaking Latin. Professor Greenough will have a new course in Latin grammar, which will dwell especially on syntax.
The Freshman English will be under the charge of Professor A. S. Hill, assistant Professor Wendell and Mr. Carpenter, and assistant Professor Briggs will have English 12 instead of Professor Wendell. English 16 and 17 are new courses given by Asst. Professors Briggs and Wendell.
In German, a course consisting of lectures and of readings and translations from modern German authors, intended especially for students in the first and second years of their study of German, will be given by assistant Professors, Bartlett, Sheldon, Francke, von Jagemann and Mr. Grandgent. The course will probably be given once a week from November to May. Owing to the absence of Mr. Babbitt next year and the appointment of assistant Professor von Jagemann, there are a number of changes of instructors in the various German courses. The distinctions between German 1a and 1b have been abolished, and the courses are now practically the same. What is German 7 in this year's pamphlet will be German 8 next year, and will be given by assistant Professor von Jagemann. Assistant Professor Francke will be aided in German 20 next year by assistant Professors Bartlett and von Jagemann.
Professor Bocher will return next year and take his old courses in the French department. French 20 to correspond to German 20, has been introduced, and will be conducted by Professor Bocher and assistant Professor Cohn.
Professor Palmer will have his old courses in the Philosophy department next year. A new course in English Philosophy will be conducted by Professor Santayana.
The only change in the courses in Political Economy is in course 9, which will be given next year as a half course.
In the department of Mathematics the instructors in many courses are changed. New courses are, Math. 12, Theory of Equation.- Mr. Sawin. Math. 14, Higher Algebra.- Mr. Sawin. Math. 16, Problems in Mechanics of Rigid Bodies.- Professor Byerly.
The other departments are practically unchanged. The courses of the Lawrence Scientific school in Engineering are described for the first time in this year's catalogue. They are eight in number, and are conducted by Professor Chaplin and Mr. Wait.
