Harvard, 7; Amherst, 1.

Harvard defeated the Amherst college team on Holmes field yesterday by a score of seven to one. Harvard braced up and played a very creditable game throughout, and clearly outdid her opponents at every point. The batting was much stronger than usual, but the men showed a decided tendency to be caught napping when at the bat. The outfielders played well, and the work of the infielders, with the exception of Quackenboss, who had an off day, was quick and clean. Downer pitched for Harvard, and the Amherst team obtained only five scattering hits from his delivery.

Amherst has the reputation of being the best team in the regular intercollegiate league, but her play yesterday was not at all steady, and at times it was even careless. Allen started in to catch, but after the second inning, he changed places with Walbridge at short-stop, who caught the rest of the game. Sexton pitched only a fair game and the home players did not find great trouble in hitting him.

In the first inning Linn got his base on balls and made third on passed balls and home on Howland's fly to left. Two more runs were gotten in the second inning, Evans and Howland each making a hit. It was not until the sixth inning that Harvard scored again. At that time Willard led off with a base hit, reached third on Mumford's two-bagger, and scored on Thayer's error. In the seventh, Downer made another hit, but was put out trying to take third on Sullivan's wild throw. Linn and Quackenboss both got first base on errors, and Linn came in on Sullivan's fearfully wild throw, while Quackenboss reached home on Willard's long drive to right field for three bases. In the eighth, Evans hit the ball safely, was advanced a base on Dean's hit and came in on Linn's hot grounder, which the short stop fumbled.

Belcher made Amherst's only run in the fifth inning on Quackenboss' fumble of an easy grounder, a wild pitch, and Henshaw's muff at the home plate of Howland's throw from centre. The game was not a close one, and therefore was devoid of any great interest. The day was chilly, also, and for that reason the attendance was not so large as it otherwise would have been. The spectators showed considerable enthusiasm, however, and Linn's quick fielding in especial called forth much applause. The Amherst men did not make any remarkably good plays, and all the infielders were inclined to throw wildly to first base. Appended is the score.
