The Game at Exeter.

HARVARD SECOND, 11; EXETER, 0.

A game was played at Exeter on Saturday between Harvard second eleven and Phillips Exeter academy. The Harvard eleven had never played together before, and showed an entire absence of team work, although individual work was at times good. Exeter was crippled by the absence of Heffelfinger, who broke his hand in the last Harvard game, and of Squires, the regular centre rush. Exeter won the toss, and took upper side. Crane started off, and in three rushes gained five yards. Johnson kicked but the backs were in the way; another kick forced a touch back. After third down, during which time Exeter fumbled badly, but tackeld well, Johnson's punt forced another touch back. Hallowell heeled the punt. Johnson tried for goal, but failed. Exeter forced the play to the centre of the field. After the scrimmage Exeter's rushers prevented Johnson's punt, but on another trial he sent the ball over Exeter's head. Hill was forced out of bounds. Miller and Crane made more notable rushes, but were stopped by Gilliam who played a remarkable game for Exeter. Finally, just before the end of the twenty-minute half, Miller made a fair catch off Stothers' punt within five yards of the middle of the field, and Johnson tried for goal. He succeeded, making a wonderfully correct kick. Score, 5-0. During the first half the backs were continually in the way, and failed to understand what should be done.

Moen took Miller's place in the second half. Exeter got the ball. Three downs in same place. Harvard's ball. Exeter's rushers got through and stopped Crane's rush losing Harvard 10 yards. Johnson made a good kick but Stothers punted back and Moen failed to catch. Crane got it and passed everything but Exeter's halfs. Exeter got twenty-five yards on Fitzhugh's foul. Crane again got through, and Moen and Johnson gained ten yards each. Hallowell passed to Moen, who ran hard and well to within twenty yards of the goal line. Crane gained ten feet more and on next down was pushed over. Johnson kicked the goal. Score, 11-0. Crane and Johnson, by rushes and punts, forced the ball toward Exeter, but time was called before anything was scored.

The best playing for Harvard was done by Crane, Johnson, Vail and Blanchard; for Exeter, by Gilliam and Newell. The teams were made up as follows:

Harvard-Rushers: Davenport, Cummings, Fitzhugh, Vail, Blanchard, Rogers, Hill; quarter-back, Hallowell; half-backs, Crane, Miller, (Moen); full back, Johnson. Dodge, substitute.

Exeter-Rushers: James, Greeley, Gilliam, Chadbourne, Furman, Howland, Newell; quarter back, Word; half backs, Phelan, Borden; full back Stothers. Ellis, substitute.

J. Smith, '92, referee; Bardwell of Exeter, umpire.
