Columbia's Eleven.

Contrary to recent precedent, Columbia will have a 'varsity eleven this year, and from this early stage the prospects for a creditable team are excellent. Since September 10 the candidates about 20 in number, have been in training quarters at Erastina, Staten Island, and the work they have accomplished there is encouraging.

J. M. Hewlett, '90, has had the coaching in charge, and will continue to do so until next Monday when Duncan Edwards, formerly captain of the 'varsity nine, will take his place. Hewlett keeps his men hard at work, giving them very little time for themselves. They rise early and walk half an hour before breakfast. At eleven they practice passing, blocking, etc, until dinner time. From four to six they play foot ball, and then take a mile run before dinner. The candidates for the rush line are as follows:

Christy, 156 pounds, Hanford, 150, and Douglass, 159.5, are also possible candidates.

The candidates for quarter back are Dolworth, '91, 143 bounds, Blossom, '91, 137 pounds, and Pierer, 138 pounds. H. Gildersleeve, 159 pounds, Hewlett, 160 pounds, Martin, 155 pounds, and O'Connor, 159 pounds, are trying for half and full backs.

The eleven will play its first game today with the Crescents of Brooklyn. Beecher and Bull of Yale, and Mowry and Edwards of Princeton will play with the Crescents. The management expects to arrange games with Harvard Yale, Princeton, Amherst and Lafayette, and to end up with Cornell on Thanksgiving day.
