On account of the examinations but few men witnessed the game between Harvard and Columbia on Holmes field yesterday afternoon. The wind was high and gusty all the afternoon, blowing almost directly up the field, making fielding difficult. Some long flies which would have been hits but for the wind were caught out. The fielding of both nines was sharp, Columbia making but 5 errors, Harvard, 4. Bates, although he was not quite in such good form as usual, giving 4 men bases on balls, held the visitors down to three hits, one of which was a scratch hit, and struck out eight men. Henshaw's catching was perfect; he had no passed balls during the game. The pitcher of the Columbia team was very wild, giving 7 men bases on balls. He was well supported behind the bat, however.

Harvard batted heavily, making 13 hits with a total of 19. Boyden and Knowlton led at the bat, the former with four hits, the latter with three. The fielding of Lamarche in left field was a feature of the game. His running catch of a terrific fly knocked by Henshaw called forth prolonged applause from the spectators.

Harvard was blanked in the first inning. In the second, she made two runs from hits by Knowlton and Campbell and a base on balls. In the next inning she made one more run from a hit by Boyden and a sacrifice. In the fifth and sixth innings the lead was increased four runs by hits of Campbell, Boyden and Howland and a base on balls. In the eighth, two more runs were made from hits by Gallivan and Boyden, and in the ninth inning a three-base hit by Knowlton, four bases on balls and an error by right field enabled Harvard to make a total of thirteen runs.

Columbia was blanked for the first five innings. In the sixth, she scored from a scratch hit by Welch and a three-base hit by McCabe. In the eighth inning she made one more run from a base on balls, a poor throw from home to second and an overthrow from Boyden to Quackenboss.

The heavy batting of Harvard and the sharp fielding of both nines made the game less dull than most of those seen on Holmes this spring. The regular umpire, for some reason, being absent, Holden, '88, officiated in his place. The score:-
