On Holmes Field, Saturday, Princeton received its fourth defeat by Harvard this season. About 2,000 people witnessed the game, which was remark-able for fine work of Bates. After the first inning, in which Harvard went to pieces and made a pure gift of two runs to Princeton, the support accorded Bates was excellent. The field work of both nines was good, Princeton excelling in this respect. The visitors could do nothing with Bates, eleven men striking out and two only reaching first on safe hits. The umpiring of McLean was a trille erratic, his decisions on strikes being somewhat off. On the whole, Princeton suffered the most from his decisions.

Harvard went first to the bat and scored at once on Gallivan's hit for three bases to right field, and Ames' muff of Dana's throw on an attempt to cut him off at the plate. The visitors made their only runs in their first inning, when they should have been blanked. Wagenhurst struck out. Durell hit a long fly to centre which Boyden misjudged and dropped. Henshaw had two passed balls in succession, the only ones of the game, giving Durell third. Dana struck out. With two men out and Durell on third, Hutchinson knocked to short, which was fumbled, allowing him to reach first base and giving Princeton its first run. Hutchinson stole second and scored on King's safe hit. King was left by Ames' fly to Knowlton. This ended the run-getting for Princeton. After the first inning, only three men reached first, two of them on errors. They seemed totally unable to fathom Bates' delivery.

Harvard, on the contrary, batted Mercer hard. In only two innings did she fail to make a hit. In the third, Gallivan and Boyden, with one man out, were given each his base on balls. Henshaw followed with a clean single, bringing in Gallivan. Willard cleared the bases with a magnificent base hit, but was put out at second on Bates' hit to King. Bates was advanced a peg on Knowlton's hit, but they were both left on Quackenboss' grounder to Price. In the fourth, Howland led off with a hit, took second on Campbell's sacrifice, third on Gallivan's put out, and scored on Boyden's three-base hit between right and centre. Harvard was blanked again in the fifth, but added one run to her score in the next inning by Campbell's hit, followed by Gallivan's single, a stolen base, and a passed ball. Harvard did not score again until the last inning. Boyden, with one man out, made his second hit, a single to right. He stole second and came in on Willard's two bagger under the willows, making a total of seven runs for Harvard, four of which were earned.

After the disastrous first inning, Harvard played a game which, if continued, will bring the championship to Cambridge. The entire nine batted hard, few men striking out. Gallivan made his first error in a championship game, an excusable muff of Bates' throw in attempting to put King out at second. Willard led his side at the bat. For Princeton, King and Dana did good work. The score:-
