In the chapel yesterday evening Prof. D. G. Lyon preached the New Year sermon. Prof. Lyon took his text from the parable of the two sons sent to work in the Vineyard, Matthew XXI. He said: He who gives us our appointed place and capacity knows no difference save in the quality and spirit of our work. In the parable there are represented two types of sons; the first, who, busy with other interests refuses to go to work in the vineyard and afterwards repenting does go, the second who at once consents to go but does not. Three other classes may be added. The first is the man who refuses to go and does not go. This class includes a large number; the idle, the dissipated, the devotee of pleasure, the society men. One thing all these drones have in common is that they feel the world owes them a living. Society is a part of our rich inheritance. Isolation is froaght with dangers. Society women should not be made the end of life.

The second class is the son who cheerfully hears and obeys. His essential difference is one of spirit. To him life is a mission to cultivate those forces and graces of character that are to last forever. He feels the well being of the whole depends on his faithfulness. We have all known one or more who approach this son, but the perfect son has appeared but once.

The third class includes a great many of us, those who are both good and bad. If our hearts were unalterably fixed for good or bad we should have no need to think of our ways; but as they are not we need to take an inventory of our stock and find out just where we stand. What season so fit as the present?

During the evening the choir sang the following anthems: "Jerusalem, High Tower thy Glorious Walis," - Parker. "Arise, Shine for thy Light is Come," - Elvey. "Grant to us Lord," - Barnby.
