An unusually large number of candidates for the '88 class nine appeared for practice on Jarvis Field, yesterday afternoon. The candidates, under the direction of Captain Palmer, did fielding work for half an hour or so in the early part of the afternoon, and then went to the nets, where they practised batting to Palmer's and Austin's pitching. The '88 nine has won the class championship every year since it has been in college, and the chances for repeating its success again this year are of the best. Many of the men who played yesterday are also trying for positions on the second nine. The list of candidates is as follows: Palmer, Austin, Page, Beals, Bailey, J. Austin, Paine, Stetson, Foss, Edwards, John Saxe, James Saxe, Holder.
