At the meeting of the Historical Society held last evening in Dr. Har's room in Hollis, President Ladd of the University of New Mexico, gave an interesting criticism of the Indian policy of the United States government. The speaker said that the injustice of the people of this country toward the Indians is a blacker stain upon our name as a nation than that of slavery. The rights of the Indians which we have repeatedly recognized in treaties and in decisions of the court, we have continually violated. In no instance has the cause of an Indian war with its terrible atrocities been anything else than the exasperating encroachments and dishonesty of the whites.
President Ladd said that the present administration had done more than its predecessors to rectify abuses, but that its representatives in the west were too often deficient in the qualities needed in their positions
