Intercollegiate Oars.

The idea of arranging an international race between representative college crews of England and America, to be rowed in this country in August, is attracting attention in American college boating circles, says the New York Commercial Advertiser. Early in the spring it was proposed to send over an eight from Cambridge to row Harvard, but this project has fallen through. Cambridge willingly allows any one of the various colleges of which she is composed to compete with other colleges, but Is reluctant in giving her 'varsity crew the same opportunity. It has been suggested that this is the reason why the proposed Cambridge-Harvard race was not arranged.

Speaking of the international race in which Jesus College has promised to take part, and in which probably one or two other Cambridge and Oxford colleges would be represented, Prof. Jasper T. Goodwin of Columbia College says: "The proposed plan is a most excellent one, if it can be brought about. There are certain obstacles, however, which would have to be met and overcome. In the first place, the colleges in this country would want to compete with a representative 'varsity crew, not with a crew which pretended to represent only one of the colleges of the university. I think Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Cornell and possibly the University of Pennsylvania, would be willing to compete in such a race."

"Some one must take the inititative in the matter. In my opinion, the proper way would be to organize a committee composed of graduates, and representing the different colleges which might desire to enter the race, to send an invitation to the English university crews."

"The fact that the Jesus College crew wishes to come over is encouraging. I think it would be the first of a series of international races. What I would like to see would be the winning 'varsity eight in England meet the winning 'varsity eight in the United States every year, first in England, then in this country. Such a series of meetings would create a most desirable fraternal feeling between the colleges of the two countries, - Herald.
