Hastings Hall.

In consequence of a bequest left some time since by a member of the Hastings family, the corporation on Friday last voted to build a new dormitory to be called Hastings Hall. The bequest was made some time since, but on account of some annuities has not been available until recently. Negotiations have already been opened with architects for the construction of the new dormitory, and it is expected to be a handsome building. It is estimated that the cost will be $200,000. Hastings Hall will be situated on that part of Holmes Field adjoining North Avenue, near where Mr. Evelett's house stands. The building will be begun next spring and will be ready for use in October, 1889. It will contain three grades of rooms-studies with two bedrooms, studies with one bedroom, and single rooms. It will be a first-class building in every particular, and will help to satisfy a need for which Harvard has for some time suffered: the need of dormitories. The hall will be welcomed as a further addition to the number of handsome buildings which Harvard already possesses, and it is to be hoped that in a short time Holmes Field will be skirted by a line of buildings like the gymnasium, the law school and our new Hastings Hall.
