NO MISTAKE THIS TIME!

YALE, '89, 7; HARVARD, '89, 8.

Only about 35 Harvard freshmen accompanied their nine to New Haven on Saturday, but these faithful few were amply rewarded by seeing the Yale freshmen defeated by a score of 8 to 7. The game was an exciting one throughout, and was rendered particularly interesting by the fact that it was the great "fence" game.

The Yale men went first to the bat and when they took the field they had three runs to their credit. Harvard was blanked in the first two innings, out in the third McPherson got first on a missed third strike, second on a passed ball, and scored on a scratch hit. In the fourth, Morgan made a run on errors. In the fifth Harvard was blanked. Yale was blanked in the second inning, made one run in the third, and failed to score again until the eighth, when she made one more run. In the sixth inning, Harvard made three hits with a total of five off Watkinson, and scored five runs, two muffed flies by Fitzgerald being responsible for four of these runs. The score stood at the beginning of the ninth inning, 7 to 5 in favor of Harvard. Yale went to bat amid terrific cheers from her supporters. Francke led off with a rattling base hit to right field, and got second on a passed ball. Osborn went out at first, and Watkinson made a base hit, bringing Francke in, and stole second. Davol was caught out on a foul. Smith made a terriffic drive to right field for three bases, bringing Watkinson in. Fitzgerald then struck out for the fifth consecutive time, and the score was tied with the Harvard freshmen yet to bat. McPherson took first on called balls, stole second, went to third on a passed ball, and scored the winning run on a beautiful base hit by Trafford. For Yale, Watkinson, Davol, Smith and Osborn did good work. Henshaw caught magnificently behind the bat, and Bingham pitched a fine game. Morgan and McPherson also played a brilliant game.

After the game the victorious freshmen, adorned from head to foot with crimson and white, hired a barge and drove around the city blowing horns and singing an adaptation of "Yale Men Say." They accepted an invitation from the sophomores to come and sit on the fence which the freshmen had forfeited, and many of them brought away chips of it as mementoes. In the evening there was a dinner at the Athenaeum, which was not very enjoyable, owing to the disturbances on the field being too fresh in memory. Most of the nine staid over Sunday in New Haven. There was little excitement in Cambridge on receipt of the news, and no celebration, as most of the freshmen were away from town.
