The University nine received its first defeat of the season yesterday afternoon, on Holmes Field, administered by the same nine which gave Harvard its only defeat last season, the Cochituate team. Unlike last year's game, however, which was lost mainly through our inability to hit Bent, yesterday's defeat was caused by poor fielding. To be sure the fielding of the other side was not of the best, but Harvard's errors were more costly. Captain Phillips tried a new arrangement of the men on bases, which cannot be said to have been thoroughly satisfactory, though Phillips, himself, played a good game at third base. McClellan, '89, was tried at short stop. He accepted his only chance and made a hit. The game throughout was interesting, and, at times, exciting, but Harvard's work has not yet come up to the standard which it ought to reach. Bent was rather wild in his pitching, and exchanged with Fenessey after two innings. Willard made some fine catches in centre.

The score.
