THE FRESHMEN WIN AN EXCITING GAME.

NO WRITER ATTRIBUTED

YALE, '89, 4; HARVARD, '89, 11.Some 800 spectators occupied the benches on Holmes, yesterday afternoon, when the Yale freshmen were defeated by the comfortable margin of 11 to 4. Additional interest was given to the game by the fact that it was the first time within the memory of undergraduates that the opening game of the series had been played in Cambridge. The Yale nine was accompanied by 50 or more supporters, who cheered their team right loyally.

The visitors opened the game briskly enough, by getting two men across the plate on two hits and three errors, one in the second, on a base on balls, a passed ball and a wild pitch, and one in the third on a base hit and two battery errors. This ended their run getting, and they only succeeded in getting one man as far as third, he being left there. Harvard scored five runs in the fifth inning, on a two-base hit by Hurley and four errors; three in the seventh on two bases on balls, a hit, and two errors, and three in the ninth on a base on balls, a hit, and four errors.

The batting on both sides was weak, and Harvard won through the poor fielding of their opponents, not one of the eleven runs being earned. Bingham pitched finely, being hit for only three singles, and striking out twelve men. Henshaw was a tower of strength behind the bat, and coached the base runners superbly. Morgan played finely at second base, making a wonderful left-handed catch. McPherson ran his bases in fine style, stealing second and third every time he had a chance. For Yale, Watkinson pitched fairly, striking out sixteen men, but was terribly wild, ten men going to first base on balls. Osborne caught well, considering the wild pitching he had to hold. Davol played well at second base. The score:
