Garber Privately Tells Faculty That Harvard Must Rethink Messaging After GOP Victory
There are a good many old Princeton boys around about here, and we naturally feel deeply grieved at the humorous Dr. Holmes insinuating that Princeton had been girdled around by Styx until Harvard enlightened her, and that Harvard had set fire to Calvinism and was burning it up in a blaze of truth.
We were getting ready our war paint and buckling on our armor, when we began asking each other what it was all about, and why Dr. McCosh couldn't have eaten his dinner in peace as the boys do in the old refectory - if that blessed old refectory is still in the land of the living, and then we turned one to another and said: "None of us ever heard of Edwards stamping his iron heel. In our days we could hardly hear the patter of Dr. McLean's gum shoes."
And so we waited to see what all the controversy was about, resolved, nevertheless, to take Princeton's side, however we might differ among ourselves on theological questions. Happily, before we could meet in martial array, it was explained that Dr. Holmes alluded to Andover seminary when he spoke of dry creeds that never learn anything. It is fortunate that the war shifted from big Princeton to little Andover.
But just here on the part of Princeton laymen we would ask Dr. Holmes, when he is in good humor at his breakfast table, to explain to us how he can expect a dry creed ever to learn anything. A creed is a belief. How can a belief learn to be anything but a belief? As for Harvard being able to burn up the old beliefs, we doubt it. The truth is she is attempting to do so, and, unfortunately, giving us nothing in their place. - Mobile Register.
