The candidates for the Yale nine will go into active training about the first of February. The work will be confined to gymnasium exercises until the first of March and then work in the cage will begin. John G. Clarkson who coached the Harvard '91 nine has been engaged to coach the pitchers. There is great satisfaction at Yale over Captain Bliss action in engaging Clarkson.
Every member of last year's nine is in college, but it is not at all likely that they will all play in their old positions as several very experienced players have entered college this year Jackson is not at all sure of first base as he will have against him, O'Neil who played the position on the Holy Cross and Southampton nines, and Stevenson who played the position and batted so well on the Exeter '90 nine. The amateur standing of O'Neil has been questioned but according to reports from New Haven the accusations are without foundation as a thorough investigation by Yale has failed to discover the slightest evidence of professionalism. Greenway who played end on the 'Varsity eleven this fall and caught on last years Andover nine is a promising candidate for catcher, but it is doubtful whether he will be allowed to play owing to the recent decision of the Yale faculty concerning freshman athletics. The pitching this season as last will be done mostly by Bowers and Carter.
