Divinity Hall.

CONTEMPLATED CHANGES IN ITS INTERIOR.

Fifty-nine years ago, Dr. Channing delivered a famous sermon at the dedication of what was then the finest building belonging to Harvard college. Such was its fame at the time that people went to Cambridge to see Divinity Hall. The building, however, does not satisfy the present needs of the school, It is necessary for a student to have his bed in a small alcove of his study, and this with many other inconveniences, makes the rooms very undesirable. The valuable library is in very great danger of fire, as the building is not fire proof. A considerable amount of money has been subscribed for remodeling the interior of the building, and so it will be thoroughly renovated this summer, at an expense of $15,000. As it is expected that enough money will be raised to erect a library building, so that Prof. Abbot's library can be accepted, the committee intend to carry on this work in connection with the improvements to Divinity Hall. If the plan is convenient, the recitation rooms and library now in the hall will be transferred to the new library building, and the space will be given to new rooms for students. By making the bed-rooms separate from the study, the plans show that even with the additional space of the library and recitation rooms, there will be two rooms less than at present. The chapel from its great historical interest will not be changed, although a much needed new organ will be procured for it. The main building will be connected with the library by a passage way. Divinity Hall will then be as desirable a dormitory as any in the college yard, and will be thoroughly equipped or its work.
